15° CBPOL

The Brazilian Polymer Congress, CBPOL, is the main Brazilian forum for polymer science and technology. CBPOL is organized by the Brazilian Polymer Association, ABPol, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018. CBPol is a biannual event that has been taking place since 1991 and attracts around 1000 participants per event. The 15th CBPol will be held from 27 to 31 October 2019 in Bento Gonçalves, a pleasant city located in the Serra Gaúcha, a tourist place in the Rio Grande do Sul state. In this event, internationally renowned scientists, researchers and students from Brazil, Latin America and other countries will present and discuss their research in polymer science and engineering. In parallel, there will be exposition and technical lectures from polymers and laboratory equipments producing companies.

Bruno Sarmento

Plenary Title: "Biofunctionality and bioengineered poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid in biomedicine"

Short biography: Dr. Bruno Sarmento is Principal Investigator and Group Leader of the Nanomedicines and Translational Drug Delivery group at Institute of Biomedical Engineering/Institute for Investigation and Innovation in Health (INEB/i3S), University of Porto, Portugal and Assistant Professor at IUCS/CESPU. His current research is focused on the development of functionalized nanomedicines and materials and their application in the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. In particular, he is interested in the establishment of nanoformulations of advanced functional biomaterials and understand their interaction with cells and biological surfaces, with interest in diabetes, cancer and infectious diseases. He has also specialized in mucosal tissue engineering models to validate functionalized nanomedicines and to perform in vitro/in vivo correlation. He published more than 300 papers in international peer reviewed (ISI) journals (H index 44), 52 book chapters and more than 250 proceedings. He edited 5 books in the field of nanomedicine, biomaterials and biological barriers. Bruno Sarmento is the Chair of the Nanomedicines and Nanoscale Drug Delivery Focus Group of the Controlled Release Society, and member of the Board of the Spanish-Portugal Local Chapter of the Controlled release Society. He is editor of European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and member of the Editorial Advisory Board of 11 international journals, including the prestigious Journal of Controlled Release and Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery. He has acted as referee for top-ranked journals in his area of expertise, and for international funding agencies: FNRS (BE), Inserm (FR), CNCS (RO), FCT (PT), Foncyt (ARG), CNPq (BR) and European Commission.

Bradley D. Olsen

Bradley D. Olsen

Plenary Title: "New Theory, New Experiments, and Big Data to Understand Polymer Networks"

Short biography: Bradley Olsen an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT. He earned his S.B. in Chemical Engineering at MIT, his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of California – Berkeley, and was a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology. He started as an assistant professor at MIT in December 2009, and he was a visiting professor at UNICAMP from 2018-2019. Olsen’s research expertise is in materials chemistry and polymer physics, with a particular emphasis on self-assembly, sustainable materials, polymer networks and gels, and protein biomaterials. He is a member of the ACS, APS, AIChE, and a fellow of the ACS POLY division.

Plenary Title: "Modelling and Experiments in FDM/FFF 3D printing"

Short biography: José António Covas is full professor at the Department of Polymer Engineering of the University of Minho (UM), Portugal, since 1998, having joined this institution in 1979. His PhD thesis received the E Gaspar Award in 1985 by the Institute of Materials, UK. His scientific interests focus on polymer processing (in-process monitoring, optimization, technological development), compounding (manufacture of polymer blends and nanocomposites) and additive manufacturing. He has authored 200 scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals, books and book chapters, as well as 11 patents (one of which was awarded a gold medal at the 47th International Patents Exhibition, Genève, 2019). He coordinated the European Master EURHEO EMMC - European Masters in Engineering Rheology. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Polymer Processing journal, associate editor of the Polímeros journal (Brazil) and member of the editorial board of three other international scientific journals. He is an expert / evaluator for ten funding agencies (ranked top 6% by EPSRC, UK) in Europe and Canada and for the European Research Council. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Polymer Processing Society. He has held various academic management positions at UM, where he is currently the President of the Council of the Engineering School. He is Vice President of PIEP (Pole of Innovation in Polymer Engineering), a private association for industrially oriented R&D. He has maintained intensive collaboration with industry, including some of Europe's leading raw material manufacturers, as well as with ESA (European Space Agency) and CERN.

Short biography: José Carlos graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Federal University of Bahia (1985), obtained a MSc. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1987) and a DSc degree in Chemical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1991). He is currently Professor Titular of Programa de Engenharia Química of COPPE, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and Executive Director of the Science Park of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. José Carlos is a member of the editorial committee of Polímeros: Ciência e Tecnologia (edited by ABPol), Macromolecular Reaction Engineering (edited by Wiley) and Processes (edited by MDPI). José Carlos is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences since 2010 and of the National Engineering Academy since 2014. José Carlos has experience in Chemical Engineering, with emphasis on general chemical reactors, and particular emphasis in the area of modeling, simulation and control of polymerization systems. José Carlos has published over 400 papers in refereed scientific journals and has over 6400 citations in the bases "Web of Science", "Scopus" and "Google Scholar" (being fully independent in at least 5500), with H factor of 42

Short biography: Luiz Antonio Pessan is Professor and currently Chair of the Department of Materials Engineering at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar). He earned his BSc degree in Materials Engineering from UFSCar in 1984, his MSc degree in Materials Engineering from UFSCar under supervision of Prof. Elias Hage Jr. in 1987, his PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin under supervision of Prof. William J. Koros in 1993, and performed postdoctoral research with Prof. Donald R. Paul (UT at Austin) in 1997. He is currently Researcher PQ-1A of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Assistant Coordinator of the Area Engineering II at the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), Assistant Editor for the journal Materials Research, Member of the Editorial Board of International Polymer Processing, Progress in Polymer Processing and the Journal of Polymer Engineering and Polímeros: Ciência e Tecnologia and International Representative to the Polymer Processing Society (PPS). He is Former Engineering Area Coordinator at the São Paulo State Research Foundation - FAPESP, former Full Member and Coordinator of the Mines and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Advisory Committee - CAMM/CNPq and former President of the Brazilian Association of Polymers (ABPol). Plenary Title: "Responsive polymers and supramolecular chemistry as basis for sensors"

Short biography: Prof. Richard Hoogenboom is heading the Supramolecular Chemistry (SC) group that was founded based on his appointment as associate professor in 2010 (full professor since 2014) at Ghent University, Belgium. He obtained a PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology under supervision of Prof. Ulrich S. Schubert and performed postdoctoral research with Prof. Martin Möller (RWTH Aachen) and Prof. Roeland Nolte (Radboud University Nijmegen). Prof. Hoogenboom has published more than 350 refereed scientific articles that received 15,000+ citations (h-index 59) and is listed as inventor on 16 patent families. He is currently associate editor for European Polymer Journal and Australian Journal of Chemistry. Prof. Hoogenboom is the recipient of the inaugural RSC Polymer Chemistry award (2015), the PI IUPAC young investigator award (2016), the Prometheus award for research from Ghent University (2016) and the ACS Macromolecules/Biomacromolecules Young Investigator award (2017). Since January 2018, Prof. Hoogenboom is a cofounder of Avroxa BVBA that commercialized poly(2-oxazoline)s under the tradename Ultroxa®.

Uttandaraman Sundararaj

Plenary Title: "Hybrid Polymer Blend Nanocomposites for Electrical, Charge Storage, ESD and EMI Shielding Applications"

Short biography: Uttandaraman (U.T.) Sundararaj is Professor in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary for the last decade. Previously, he was Professor at the University of Alberta for 12 years and worked 4 years in R&D with the General Electric Company. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota (1994) and his BSc from University of Alberta (1989), both in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Sundararaj’s main research interests are in polymer blend and nanocomposite structure generation, modeling of polymer processes, and hybrid polymer nanocomposites using novel nanomaterials, particularly for electrical and EMI shielding applications. His group has created custom-designed miniature melt mixers and synthesizes novel nanofillers in-house. He has published over 200 refereed publications. He received the International Polymer Processing Society’s Morand Lambla Award (2003), the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship (2006), the Killam Annual Professorship (2012), and the NSERC Accelerator Research Award (2015) for demonstrated excellence in research. He is a fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers (2018), the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (2008), the Chemical Institute of Canada (2018) and the Engineering Institute of Canada (2019). He has received several teaching awards, including the Rutherford Award (2005)—the highest teaching honor at the Univ. of Alberta, Excellence in Education Award (2007) from APEGA, the Medal of Distinction for Engineering Education (2008) from Engineers Canada, the 3M National Teaching Fellowship (2010), CIC Chemical Education Award (2014) and recently has twice won the University’s Student Union Teaching Award (2016, 2018) and the Teaching Award for Educational Leadership (2019). He has given over forty plenary and keynote presentations at major national and international conferences.
